What Is Windows Security?

Windows security is typically built-in to any device that runs a version of the Microsoft operating system. It protects your data and devices from hacker and malware attacks using various methods. This includes basic antivirus protection, a firewall and other tools to protect against data loss. You can manage and access these settings through the Windows Security application or a small shield icon within the notification area of the taskbar.

Microsoft’s own antivirus software, Microsoft Defender Antivirus, is part of Windows. In the initial versions of the program, it was referred to as Windows Defender Security Center. The application is free and provides chip-to cloud protection. It can also be used in conjunction with other security solutions and can detect threats that other solutions miss.

One of the most important features is reputation-based security. It uses an online database to analyze websites and apps for their reputation scores. If a website or program is not rated well, it’s blocked from running on the device. This was a good idea and successfully stopped phishing sites and harmful programs during our tests however, it didn’t block as many as third-party competitors did.

Other features include firewalls and network security that examines the network you are using and the apps you use in order to determine their security. Device security is another feature that lets you use advanced hardware features such as core isolation. This can help secure your device against certain types of attacks but you will require a compatible computer in order to take advantage of it.
